First Semester

BIOT-Sem-I-V-T: Physics 

Time allowed: 3 Hours  Max. Marks: 67 


NOTE: Attempt five questions in all, including Question No. IX (Unit-III) which is compulsory and selecting two questions each from Unit I -11.


UNIT-1

1. a) State and explain Coulomb law. Two point charges one with charge q at (-,0) and the second with charge - at (d, 0) are placed. Find the electric field at point 'C' whose coordinates are (0, R). (X,Y) refer to coordinates. (2,6)


b) How technology helps us understand the functioning of biological systems. Explain with two examples. (5.4)



II. a) State and explain Gauss law. Find the electric field at any point outside a uniformly charged solid sphere of radius R and total charge q. (2,6)

b) Mycoplasma, smallest bacteria have a radius about 0.1 micrometer and the largest bacteria have a radius about 50 micrometers. What is the surface area-to-volume ratio for each of these? (5,4)



III. a) What is the total capacitance C if three capacitances C. Cz Cs are arranged 

(i) inparallel.

ii) in series. (8)


(b) Explain the equation of continuity. (5,4)



IV. a) An infinite plane carries a uniform surface charge o. Find its electric field at any point perpendicular to the sheet. (8)

b) Obtain the expression for energy stored in a capacitor. (5,4)


UNIT -II

V. a) Using Fresnel Biprism arrangement how can one determine the wavelength of monochromatic light. (8)

b) Many interferences leads to diffraction. Explain. (5,4)



VI. a) How does a telescope works? Obtain the expression for its resolving power. (8) 

b) Distinguish Fraunhofer diffraction and Fresnel diffraction. (5,4)



VII. a) What is the Compton effect? Obtain the expression A2 (1-сos %), where mc symbols have their usual moaning. (8)

b) Explain the working of electron microscope.(5,4) 


VIII. a) Explain the phenomena of radioactivity. What are the five kinds of radioactive decays? Explain in detail. (8)

b) What is phase velocity? What is group velocity? When are they equal? (5,4)


                                            Unit- III


IX. Attempt the following:

a) The distance between two cities is 1440 Km by road. How far is this in miles? (2) 

b) Express Ohm's law in vector form. (2)

c) Explain the term polarization. (2) 

d) What is i) half-life ii) mean life of a radioactive substance. (2)

e) Explain concept of fluorescent microscope. (2)

f) State Uncertainty principle (2)

g) The proton that is the nucleus of the hydrogen atom attracts the electron that orbits it. Relative to this force, does the electron attracts the proton with less force, with more force with the same amount of force? Explain. (1,4)

b) What was the position of women in the Vedic age? 

c) What is the importance of Taxila? 

d) Name two important orders of the Sufis in the Punjab. 

e) Define the Masand system. 

f) What do you understand by Miri and Piri? 

g) When and where was Guru Arjan Dev martyred? 

h) Who were the Panj Pairas? 

i) What do you understand by Rakhi? 

j) Define Gurmat. (5x1)

II. What do you know about the socio-economic life of the Harappan civilization? (10)

III. Give an account of the impact of Buddhism in the Punjab. (10)

IV. What do you know about socio-economic life under the Lodhis in the Punjab? (10)

V. Examine the main features of Bhakti. (10)


UNIT - III

VI. Give an account of the new ideology of Guru Nanak. (10)

VII. Discuss the causes leading to the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev. (10)


UNIT - IV 

VIII. Give an account of society during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's rule. (10) 

IX. a) Mark the following places on the outline map of the Punjab: Lahore, Ropar, Tarn Taran, Goindwal, Sanghol, and Kiratpur. (6x1) 

b) Write a brief note on any two places mentioned above,(2x2)

Time allowed: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 67 


NOTE: Attempt five questions in all including Q No.-IX (Unit-III) which is compulsory and select two questions each from Unit I-II.

UNIT-I 

1. (a) Draw molecular energy level diagram of NO molecule. Tell its bond order and magnetic behavior. 

(b) What are Scater Rules? State properly calculate the effective nuclear charge for one of the 4s electron of zinc atom.


II. (a) Explain the term ionization energy. What are the different factors on which it depends? 

(b) Define the following terms: - 

(i) Chemical shift 

(ii) Shielding and deshielding of protons 

(iii) Zero point energy 

(iv) Stokes and anti stokes lines


III. (a) Differentiate ideal and non-ideal solutions. 

(b) Derive the relation between freezing point depression of solution and mole fraction of the dissolved solute. 

(c) Calculate osmotic pressure at O'C of a 5% solution of urea (mol. wt=60) (R=0.0821 lit-at/deg/mol).


IV. (a) Discuss in detail effect of catalyst on rate of reaction. 

(b) Differentiate order and molecularity. 

(c) Explain the effect of temperature on reaction rate in terms of Arrhenins equation.



UNIT-II 

(V) (a) State and explain Stark-Einstein law of photochemical equivalence. What do you mean by molar extinction coefficient? 

(b )Define and explain the terms Fluorescence and phosphorescence properly.


VI. (a) Explain the basic postulates of Werner's coordination theory.

(b) Write IUPAC names of the following: 

(i) K[Hg1] 

(ii) (Colen), CI, Br 

(iii) (CH(NH) 

(iv) LAH) 

(v) [Co(NH,),CI] 

( c )Explain with help of examples, geometrical isomerism in complexes having coordination number six. (5+5+3)


(VI )Differentiate inductive effect and electrometric effect. 

( b) Discuss and compare and sy reactions with help of mechanisms. 

( c )Write a note on structure, methods of preparation, and reactivity of singlet and triplet carbenes. (3+6+4)


VIII. (a )How will you account for the fact that acid chlorides are most reactive and acid amides are least reactive towards nucleophilic substitution reactions? Justify.

(b) Write and explain the mechanism of the following reactions: 

(i) Esterification 

(ii) HVZ reaction (7+6)


UNIT-III 

IX. Attempt the following: - 

(a) Define linkage isomerism in coordination complexes with one example. 

(b) Write the units of the rate constant for the first and second-order reaction. 

(c) What do you mean by activation energy? 

(d) Explain Allred and Rochow scale of electronegativity.

(e ) Tell three centred electron pair bond with example. 

( f) Explain briefly hyperconjugation.

( g) Briefly explain the terms transmittance and absorbance. 

(h) Which gas is commonly known as stranger gas?

III. a) Explain the significance of the food chain in the ecosystem citing an example.

b) Discuss the biotic components and their role in the ecosystem.                                             

IV. a) What is the role and significance of Habitat in Ecosystem?

b) Discuss the different types of succession with example.

V. a) Discuss the components of the innate immune system.

b) Describe the mechanism of gas exchange in the lungs. 


VI. Explain the architecture of the Digestive system mentioning me role of each component.   

          

VII. a) Discuss the different sense organs and their role.


b) Draw a well-labeled diagram of neurons and discuss its role in the nervous system.


VIII. a) What are the hormones secreted by the Pituitary gland? Discuss their role. b) Draw a detailed and well-labeled diagram of the human male reproductive organ.

b) Define buffer. Name some biological important buffers. (6,3)



III. a) What makes water a biological important solvent? Explain. 

b) What do you understand by colligative properties? Comment on its significance in biology (4,5)

IV. a) Give reaction of monosaccharides with hydrogen cyanide and hydroxylamine. (2x3)

 b) What do you mean by glycoproteins? Differentiate between O-glycoproteins and N- glycoproteins. (3)


V. a) Elaborate on glycosaminoglycans. Give the structure of any two glycoproteins. 

b) Differentiate between starch and glycogen. (6,3)



VII. a) Give the salient features of double helical structure of DNA with the help of diagram.

b) What do mean by minor bases of DNA. Give structure of any two such bases. (6,3)

VIII. a) What do you mean by porphyrins? Draw structure of porphyrin nucleus.

b) Write a detailed note on the detection of porphyrins. (6,3) 


IX. Discuss heme and other metalloporphyrins occurring in nature in detail. (9)
