MAY 2014
B.Tech. (AE) Examination
Subject: Automotive Aerodynamics
Subject Code: BTAE-604
Time
Allowed: 03 Hours Max.
Marks: 60
Note:
Section A is compulsory. Answer any four questions from section B. Answer any
two questions from section C. Assume any missing data suitably.
Section A
1 (i) How do
you measure performance potential of vehicle aerodynamics?
(ii) What
are cooling requirements of an engine?
(iii) Draw
and explain the concept of low drag profile.
(iv) What is
meant by a bluff body?
(v) What is
boat tailing?
(vi) Draw
and explain the concept of wind shield angle.
(vii) Draw
and explain a dust flow pattern.
(viii) What
is meant by drag?
(ix) What is
meant by wind noise?
(x) Describe
principle of wind tunnel technology.
Section B
2
Differentiate between external and internal flow problems by taking real life
examples.
3 What are
the strategies for aerodynamic development?
4 Describe
the effect of front end modification of cars.
5 Discuss
the effect of dirt accumulation on the performance of vehicle.
6 State the
limitations of simulation used in wind tunnel technology.
Section C
7 A
passenger car has a frontal area of 21 square feet and a drag coefficient of
0.42. It is travelling along at 55 mph. Calculate the aerodynamic drag and the
associated horsepower requirements if it is driving into a 25 mph headwind and
with a 25 mph tailwind.
8 Describe
the lateral stability problems and the methods to avoid such problems.
9 Describe
the road testing methods and numerical methods used in wind tunnels for
automotive aerodynamics.
