Q1)
a) What is pseignition?

Q2) Discuss the effect of detonation on engine performance.
Q3) During testing of a four  stroke diesel engine  the following  observations
were noted :
Area of indicator diagram = 420mml
Length of indicator diagram = 62mm
Spring number = l.l bar/mm.
' Diameter of piston = l00mm
Length of the stroke = l50mm
Engine speed = 450 rpm.
Determine the indicated mean effective pressure and indicated power.

Q4) Compare and contrast the rotary compressor and reciprocating compressor.

Q5) Explain the effect of prewhirl on the impeller of centrifugal pump.

Q6) What do you understand by propulsion system? Discuss the advantages
and disadvantages of jet propulsion system.

Q7) A centrifugal compressor delivers 50 kg of air per minute at a pressure of 2
bar and 97"C. The intake pressure and temperature of the air is I bar and
l5'C. If no heat is lost to the surrounding find :
(a) Index of compression.
(b) Power required if the compression is isothermal.

8. a simple closed cycle gas turbine plant receives air at 1 bar and 15 C and compressor it to 5 bar and then heats it to 800 C in the heating chamber. The hot air expands in a turbine back to 1 bar. Calculate the power developed per kg. of air supplied per second. Take Cp for air as 1kj/kgk.
