ES-342: TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS

Time : 3 hours                                                                                     Maximum Weightage : 70%

Note :   (i) All the four questions are compulsory.
(ii) All questions carry equal weightage.

1. Answer the following question in about 600 words.

Define mathematics and explain the role of intuition and logic in mathematical thinking.
Explain why mathematics should be taught as a compulsory subject at school stage.

OR

Describe the basic principles underlying the development of a method of teaching
mathematics. Compare and contrast the basic characteristics of analytico-synthetic and discovery methods of teaching mathematics.

2. Answer the following question in about 600 words.

Discuss detailed strategy of teaching, any one of the following topics highlighting instructional objectives, learning experiences and approaches to evaluation :

OR

Application of Percentage in daily life. Arithmetic mean and standard deviation of given scores.

3. Write short notes on any five of the following in about 120 words each :

(a)  Factors affecting mathematics curriculum.
(b)   Importance of assignment in teaching mathematics.
(c)  Characteristics of Real Numbers.
(d)  Opening and Operating a Bank Account.
(e)  Factoring a quadratic polynomial.
(f)   Comparison of algebraic laws of sets and real numbers.
(g)  Teaching the area of a triangle.
(h)  Explaining the meanings of angles of elevation and depression.
(i)    Meaning and application of Pythagoras Theorem.

4. Answer the following question in about 600 words :

Discuss the application of computers in solving mathematical problems and explain the sequential steps involved in it. Apply an algorithm to find out the roots of the quadratic equation ax2 +bx +c =0 (a≠0).
